Big Chop: 7 Month Update

Greetings…

It has been a whole seven months since I cut all of the relaxer out of my hair and things are coming along. My hair is growing healthily and my future with long natural tresses is becoming more visible.

I am still keeping my wash day routine fairly simple by just shampooing my hair with a sulfate-free shampoo and letting the coinciding conditioner sit in my hair for about 45 minutes to an hour. I’ve also learned that detangling is a hassle and shrinkage is real. However, over all, I am learning and understanding my hair texture. They say your hair texture can change as it grows out and gets longer. When I first cut my hair, my texture was 4C. Then as it grew out little by little, I started to see tight curls and coils develop on one side of my head. The other side of my head has coils here and there but is mostly still 4c while the other side is leaning towards a 4b. I know, it sounds weird!

I’m not at ponytail length yet but I’m slowly and surely getting there. I am still using my lace front wigs as a protective style however I am looking to try something new. Maybe braids? We’ll see what the future holds.

If you have any suggestions for natural hair products, please leave them in the comments below. I have become a product junkie and am looking for new things conditioners, shampoos, and oils to try.

Peace and Love

Luxe Therapy

Good Afternoon peeps,

So recently, I was given a Scalp Soother to try by Luxe Therapy. I opened it and had moderate expectations being that I’ve used products like this before, however, this was divine! It was thin enough to slide right underneath my wig and it got those hard to reach spots that can be difficult to scratch.

As you can see, it is built just like an old school pick but it is a bit thinner.

So stop patting those weaves and get you one of these!

You can definitely use this Scalp Soother no matter what your hair type is. Just make sure you rinse it off between each wash and do not scratch too hard especially if you just got your braids done.

Big Chop: 3 Month Update

What’s Up!

So three months ago, as you may or may not know, I cut off all the hair on my head that was chemically relaxed. That left me with a short, tapered, and curly fro. I was unsure about the look at first, however, I knew it was a step in the direction of being able to enjoy my natural curls.

Since the chop, I’ve been keeping a very low maintenance hair routine (depending on what you call low maintenance). I shampoo and condition my tresses for 45-60 minutes every 7-10 days and keep it in braids underneath my wig.

The wig that I’m currently wearing I made with two 18-inch bundles, a 16-inch bundle, and a 14-inch closure.

unnamed-6.jpg

I wear it on a regular basis because it has the texture of what natural hair would feel like if it was blow dried and maybe flat ironed, which is why people always stop and ask “Wow! Your hair is so long! Is it all yours?”. That’s when I have to let dreadfully let them down and tell them the truth. Why not just tell them it is my hair? Because why lie? That way, I can also promote myself as a wig maker :]

Here are some updated pics:

This was after I took my cornrows out. AKA a braid out

unnamed-3.jpg         unnamed-2.jpg

I’ve noticed some length between when I cut my hair and now. It’s literally not even an inch but it’s growth !

You know I had to throw a little filter on there.

I could always use some hair inspo, so if you have encouraging words drop them in the comments below !

CORE Magazine presents Beautifully Bold

Screen Shot 2016-12-19 at 7.10.02 PM.png

This past Saturday, I was fortunate enough to be invited to Beautifully Bold, an event presented by CORE Magazine. Geared towards young girls, this event covered the do’s and do not’s of skin care, health, makeup, nails, and hair with a full panel of experts. I took over their Instagram account for the day to cover the event via live video and spoke to some of the panelists and influencers one on one about my own beauty needs.

There were sooooo many amazing things I learned from all of the experts, so I’ve complied a list below of the top ten things we covered that day. Some of these tips we already knew but needed to be emphasized again.

  1. Your eyebrows are NOT twins, they are sisters.
  2. There is no such thing as conditioning too much.
  3. If you are worried about the amount of acne building up on your face, cut out dairy for a week.
  4. Contrary to popular belief, EVERYONE should use sunscreen no matter how old you are or how much melanin you have. It is the best anti-aging cream!
  5. Putting gel on your nails can be a healthy way for them to grow, however, if not properly cared for, it can have a negative effect.
  6. The best time of the year to straighten your hair is in the winter. No humidity, no frizz.
  7. Never, EVER fill in your eyebrows with black.
  8. You have to properly prep your skin before putting on your makeup everyday.
  9. Co-washing is like rinsing with water and conditioning. It isn’t totally necessary to buy one, but doesn’t hurt either.
  10. Everyone has a different beauty routine that works for them. Don’t knock your own routine because someone is doing something different than you.

The Beautifully Bold event ended with a quick makeup tutorial showing how to do a fresh face for an everyday look and some giveaways. We also received a goodie bag full of hair products which I will post about soon!

December Must-Haves

This month dedicated to

December is that special month of the year when all the magic happens. The holidays are finally among us, which means it’s time to decide what you’re going to show out in at the family gatherings or for those holiday parties. So let me just remind you of this: You can never go wrong with a little sparkle.

1. Sparkly Tops

Cute tops like this are an easy way to add a little pizazz to an outfit. It takes the look up a notch and can be dressed up or dressed down.

2.Sparkly Shoes

Now, this is a different take on the sparkly shoes that Dorothy wears to go see the wizard. A totally different take. I like this gold ballet shoe below because it is a neutral, which means more outfit options as well as the fact that it’s flat. Every girl loves a good pair of heels but our feet thank us when we wear flats. Plus, if you’re going to a holiday party these are super cute to switch into when your feet get tired from your heels.

3.Shiny nail polish

If you are a true nail polish wearer, you would know that sparkly nail polish is the hardest to get off. It takes more than a cotton ball and some acetone. You need strength and a lot of patience. That’s why I am not going for sparkly nails this year, but rather shine. Shiny/metallic nails are also becoming a cool trend too!

4.Shiny velvet dress

This is more for the New Year’s parties that will be happening. Typically we think of New Year’s outfits as lots of sparkle, but with the new velvet trend that’s going on, I think this year might be different. I think we are going to see a lot of velvet because it has a shine to it and you still get that “New Year’s theme”. I also think velvet is so classy!

Facial Cleansers!

Good Morning

When I was in college (which was only a few months ago) and would come back from a party at 2am, there were two things I was never too drunk to do: wash my face and wrap my hair.

This post is not only for those girls that enjoy a daily face beat but also for the gals that like to go au natural and wear little to no makeup. No matter what category you fit into, the most important thing to remember is to wash your face daily!

Washing your face everyday is super important because 1. you never want to sleep in your makeup and 2. even if you don’t wear makeup, nature’s elements like dust particles and dirt can land on your skin and help clog your pores and even lead to acne.

…I know right?!

Typically, my face washing routine involves me removing my makeup with coconut oil and then washing my face using the Neutrogena Naturals Facial Cleanser and Pore Scrub. They both cost about $7-$8 each and they feel so light on my skin.

So with the help of some friends, I did a little research about some other popular facial cleansers and products that our generation is using.

  1. St.Ives Apricot Scrub  | $3-$4

Happy Summer!!! (The last time I blogged, it wasn’t yet summer)

My favorite makeup product to use in the summer is highlight. If you’re wearing highlight and the sun hits you, you will glow (literally). It just makes me feel … sparkly.

Anyhoo, my favorite summer highlight that I have been using for a while now is the NYX Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator. I believe they have four different colors and I decided to go with the third darkest one. It highlights my cheeks very nicely and stays on for a long time. I don’t need a lot of it in order to see the difference so it will last me a while. In the photos below, I used that along with a simple drugstore lipgloss that I got for a simple low maintenance makeup day! (Sometimes when I’m in a hurry and don’t have time for makeup, which is rare, I’ll dab a little bit on my cheek bone with my fingers)

d31fb024-28b8-4cf8-9a87-fcfd90e02f12.jpg

As far as the outfit goes, I happen to see this shirt in Five Below one day and bought it because 1. I love the color and 2. My summer body will be in progress all summer because I have no will power when it comes to ice cream !

The jeans are by Tinsel, which I found in Macy’s. They are actually a decent brand of jeans. Besides the rips becoming bigger over time, the way the jeans fit is really comfortable.
