Festival SZN: The Essentials

The weather is finally starting to break and while those with allergies are going through a rough time right now, everyone is still looking forward to a summer full of late night bonfires, cookouts, relaxing beach days, rooftop parties, and of course, music festivals.

Summer festival season is a memorable time of year, especially when you’re enjoying it with a great group of people. You spent your hard earned money on a pricey ticket and you are expecting to have nothing less than an amazing time. This includes lots of Instagram pictures (some pictures won’t make it to the gram because we still have jobs to return to on Monday morning), day drinking, and dancing from beginning to the very end. Whether the festival is one day or a full weekend, there are some essentials that you’ll need to make it through.

SUNSCREEN

This should be applied before you even get in the car. It’s most likely going to be a very hot and sunny day. Even if it’s partly cloudy, you still need to protect yourself. Carry a little sunscreen with you so that you can reapply at least one more time before the end of the day. Most of us don’t wear sunscreen on a regular basis like we should, but it is crucial that we commit to it on days like this.

SNACKS

Food typically isn’t allowed in the venues. So, if you decide to skip on their overpriced snacks, bring something to leave in the car. An apple or a small bag of chips will be so clutch on the car ride home.

HAND SANITIZER

You’ll most likely end up using a port – o – potty at some point. Do you need more of an explanation?

ZIPLOCK BAG

If you carry one ziplock bag with you, there is a 90% chance you’ll use it for something. One thing it’s good for is the rain. I’ve been to my fair share of concerts where the sky opened up and showered us. That’s when you use your ziplock bag to put your phone in; even while it’s in your purse. You’ll save yourself from water damage. Or, if you have a jewelry malfunction, into the bag it goes.

SUNGLASSES

These are not just for fashion purposes. Sunglasses are made to protect your eyes and if you’re going to be in the sun all day, you’ll regret not bringing them. So, even if your winged-eye liner looks absolutely perfect that day, still bring your shades.

PORTABLE CHARGER

I can’t stress enough the importance of bringing your portable charger. It’s one of those little things you cannot forget at home. You’re going to go through most of your phone battery in one day and so a portable charger is imperative. They usually save the best performers for last and you don’t want to risk not getting a good picture or video of your faves.

Valentine’s Day with Leaders Cosmetics

Hi Everyone!

Valentine’s day is going to be different for me this year. Even though I am still single and my DM’s are collecting cob webs, I’m spending February 14th with someone special. Me.

giphy-1.gif

This is a day dedicated to expressing love and that includes self love too. No one can give you the kind of love that you have for yourself. That’s the kind of love that started at such a young age and will continue to grow with you throughout the rest of your days.

There are numerous ways to practice self care, my favorite being face masks. I love giving my face the ultimate treatment it deserves. I wear make up regularly, sweat when I’m at the gym, and STILL have family members that like to pinch my cheeks. So when I’m able to, I like to treat myself.

giphy.gif

This Valentine’s Day, I’ll be using face masks from Leaders Cosmetics. They offer a Daily Wonder’s Kit, which comes with a pack of six face masks that serve different purposes and are made from premium cotton. It’s a small boost in your daily skin routine that will help hydrate, clarify, and soothe your skin with the goal of a near perfect complexion.

I tried one already called “What Happened Last Night?”, which is a radiance revitalizing mask and I absolutely love how it feels. Between the premium cotton and the solution it is saturated in, all I needed was two sliced cucumbers covering my eyes. They recommend leaving it on for about 15 minutes, but I may have left it on for a bit longer.

Enjoy your Valentine’s Day!

Easy, Breezy, Beautiful

Wah gwan my yute!

I’m feeling a little Caribbean this time around. I guess that’s the theme for my latest fashion post.

The dress I’m wearing was a gift from one of my cool cousins and gave me summertime island vacation vibes. Since a trip like that wasn’t happening this year, I settled for a more local location.

I love the flow of the dress and how freely I can move in it. Dresses like this are fun and great for the warm weather. The sleeves are loose with buttoned cuffs and the dress itself is made of chiffon material.

The next thing is the print. It definitely isn’t subtle and it screams summer! The bright pattern gives off the feeling of being on an island. Then add in some of my imagination and boom, we’re in Jamaica!

Now, since this dress was a gift, I’ll put some links below to where you can find dress that have similar bright and bold prints, are flowing, and are perfect for vacation.

Hair Today … Gone Tomorrow

Hey Hey !

I wanted to give you all an update on my hair journey since the big chop!

So, my hair was growing very nicely, however it was uneven because I don’t do well cutting my OWN hair and couldn’t really see the back. I did my best and it wasn’t too noticeable. I continued to wash and deep condition my hair regularly, braid it up, and wear my wigs, which helped it grow as well.

I knew by December that I needed a trim to get rid of my dead ends and I decided to go all out and get it blown out with a silk press. I took about a month to find a stylist I felt comfortable with and with great recommendations from friends and family, I finally found one and she wasn’t too far from home. Major plus!

It sucked to see how much hair she had to cut after a year of growing it, but I had to remind myself that most of it was dead hair anyway. She also had to even it out on both sides.

Below are some pictures of what my natural hair looked like the last time I washed it before I went to the salon. Then, there are some pics of what it looked like about a week after I got the silk press. It took a week because I couldn’t keep my fingers out of my hair. It was so soft and I could feel my scalp so easily. I honestly didn’t know how soft and silky my hair could feel with a silk press!

It was a great change up and I have decided that I’ll get one once a year. Can’t get it done too often or my hair could break off. Trust me, I asked.

Going forward, the plan is to try some natural styles this summer with my healthier hair while also giving it a break and tucking it under a wig.

BeYou’Ty by Char

Hi Everyone ,

As you all know I went on a road trip to Canada recently. One of the big preparations I had to make was what I would do with my hair during this getaway. Slaying my lace front wig was not an option this time around as I wanted something that didn’t require a lot of daily maintenance.

I opted for convenient, bohemian style, à la mode braids done by Charlene Banks, otherwise known as BeYou’Ty By Char. She is a Californian native who recently moved back to ”The Golden State” after living in New Jersey for a number of years. After working in corporate America for BMW, Charlene decided to quit her job and pursue her passion for styling hair.

“I taught myself how to braid hair when I was 16. Once I got to high school, I was braiding almost every girl’s hair in school”, she stated.

Her signature style includes faux locs but she also does crotchet, braids (of course), as well as eyebrow microblading.

Check out her work in the pics below in addition to her Instagram pages and website:

In addition to having clients on the west coast, Charlene does travel back to New Jersey every quarter to cater to her east coast clients as well.

Big Chop: 7 Month Update

Greetings…

It has been a whole seven months since I cut all of the relaxer out of my hair and things are coming along. My hair is growing healthily and my future with long natural tresses is becoming more visible.

unnamed-1.jpg          unnamed-2.jpg                               Braid Out                                                                Length Check

I am still keeping my wash day routine fairly simple by just shampooing my hair with a sulfate-free shampoo and letting the coinciding conditioner sit in my hair for about 45 minutes to an hour. I’ve also learned that detangling is a hassle and shrinkage is real. However, over all, I am learning and understanding my hair texture. They say your hair texture can change as it grows out and gets longer. When I first cut my hair, my texture was 4C. Then as it grew out little by little, I started to see tight curls and coils develop on one side of my head. The other side of my head has coils here and there but is mostly still 4c while the other side is leaning towards a 4b. I know, it sounds weird!

unnamed-4.jpg

I’m not at ponytail length yet but I’m slowly and surely getting there. I am still using my lace front wigs as a protective style however I am looking to try something new. Maybe braids? We’ll see what the future holds.

If you have any suggestions for natural hair products, please leave them in the comments below. I have become a product junkie and am looking for new things conditioners, shampoos, and oils to try.

Peace and Love

Luxe Therapy

Good Afternoon peeps,

So recently, I was given a Scalp Soother to try by Luxe Therapy. I opened it and had moderate expectations being that I’ve used products like this before, however, this was divine! It was thin enough to slide right underneath my wig and it got those hard to reach spots that can be difficult to scratch.

As you can see, it is built just like an old school pick but it is a bit thinner.

unnamed-1.jpg

So stop patting those weaves and get you one of these!

You can definitely use this Scalp Soother no matter what your hair type is. Just make sure you rinse it off between each wash and do not scratch too hard especially if you just got your braids done.

Big Chop: 3 Month Update

What’s Up!

So three months ago, as you may or may not know, I cut off all the hair on my head that was chemically relaxed. That left me with a short, tapered, and curly fro. I was unsure about the look at first, however, I knew it was a step in the direction of being able to enjoy my natural curls.

Since the chop, I’ve been keeping a very low maintenance hair routine (depending on what you call low maintenance). I shampoo and condition my tresses for 45-60 minutes every 7-10 days and keep it in braids underneath my wig.

The wig that I’m currently wearing I made with two 18-inch bundles, a 16-inch bundle, and a 14-inch closure.

unnamed-6.jpg

I wear it on a regular basis because it has the texture of what natural hair would feel like if it was blow dried and maybe flat ironed, which is why people always stop and ask “Wow! Your hair is so long! Is it all yours?”. That’s when I have to let dreadfully let them down and tell them the truth. Why not just tell them it is my hair? Because why lie? That way, I can also promote myself as a wig maker :]

Here are some updated pics:

unnamed-1.jpg

This was after I took my cornrows out. AKA a braid out

unnamed-3.jpg         unnamed-2.jpg

I’ve noticed some length between when I cut my hair and now. It’s literally not even an inch but it’s growth !

unnamed-5.jpg

You know I had to throw a little filter on there.

I could always use some hair inspo, so if you have encouraging words drop them in the comments below !

CORE Magazine presents Beautifully Bold

Screen Shot 2016-12-19 at 7.10.02 PM.png

This past Saturday, I was fortunate enough to be invited to Beautifully Bold, an event presented by CORE Magazine. Geared towards young girls, this event covered the do’s and do not’s of skin care, health, makeup, nails, and hair with a full panel of experts. I took over their Instagram account for the day to cover the event via live video and spoke to some of the panelists and influencers one on one about my own beauty needs.

There were sooooo many amazing things I learned from all of the experts, so I’ve complied a list below of the top ten things we covered that day. Some of these tips we already knew but needed to be emphasized again.

 1. Your eyebrows are NOT twins, they are sisters.
 2. There is no such thing as conditioning too much.
 3. If you are worried about the amount of acne building up on your face, cut out dairy for a week.
 4. Contrary to popular belief, EVERYONE should use sunscreen no matter how old you are or how much melanin you have. It is the best anti-aging cream!
 5. Putting gel on your nails can be a healthy way for them to grow, however, if not properly cared for, it can have a negative effect.
 6. The best time of the year to straighten your hair is in the winter. No humidity, no frizz.
 7. Never, EVER fill in your eyebrows with black.
 8. You have to properly prep your skin before putting on your makeup everyday.
 9. Co-washing is like rinsing with water and conditioning. It isn’t totally necessary to buy one, but doesn’t hurt either.
 10. Everyone has a different beauty routine that works for them. Don’t knock your own routine because someone is doing something different than you.

The Beautifully Bold event ended with a quick makeup tutorial showing how to do a fresh face for an everyday look and some giveaways. We also received a goodie bag full of hair products which I will post about soon!

December Must-Haves

This month dedicated to

stock-photo-sparkle-and-shine-gold-faux-foil-metallic-glitter-quote-isolated-on-white-background-283986587.jpg

December is that special month of the year when all the magic happens. The holidays are finally among us, which means it’s time to decide what you’re going to show out in at the family gatherings or for those holiday parties. So let me just remind you of this: You can never go wrong with a little sparkle.

1. Sparkly Tops

Cute tops like this are an easy way to add a little pizazz to an outfit. It takes the look up a notch and can be dressed up or dressed down.

d2c4941af85f6d4d1dc8870d526e153e.jpg

2.Sparkly Shoes

Now, this is a different take on the sparkly shoes that Dorothy wears to go see the wizard. A totally different take. I like this gold ballet shoe below because it is a neutral, which means more outfit options as well as the fact that it’s flat. Every girl loves a good pair of heels but our feet thank us when we wear flats. Plus, if you’re going to a holiday party these are super cute to switch into when your feet get tired from your heels.

515195c51c2807c076512afadd6d1288.jpg

3.Shiny nail polish

If you are a true nail polish wearer, you would know that sparkly nail polish is the hardest to get off. It takes more than a cotton ball and some acetone. You need strength and a lot of patience. That’s why I am not going for sparkly nails this year, but rather shine. Shiny/metallic nails are also becoming a cool trend too!

de1e9c5ef709bdf4419aa61304091ba8.jpg

4.Shiny velvet dress

This is more for the New Year’s parties that will be happening. Typically we think of New Year’s outfits as lots of sparkle, but with the new velvet trend that’s going on, I think this year might be different. I think we are going to see a lot of velvet because it has a shine to it and you still get that “New Year’s theme”. I also think velvet is so classy!

Merry Christmas!
